Lou Balaclava

This pattern includes both written instructions and charts.

The elegant Lou Balaclava, featuring a sophisticated Lou pattern, is worked in a topdown method. The project begins with the top of the head, then stitches are picked up on both sides to knit flat down to the jawline. You can freely adjust the length and the fit or looseness of the face frame line as you knit. After joining the sides below the chin, ribbing is worked. Finally, the face frame line is completed to finish the piece.

The sample is in size S (15 cast-on sts under the chin) and was modeled on a head circumference of 53 cm

Yarn
Lace weight held 5 strands together or Worsted weight (single strand)
Le Petit Silk Mohair in Very Light Blue from Biches & Bûches (212 meters / 25 grams):
636(720)806(848) meters / 75(85)95(100) grams
Alternatively, use a Worsted weight yarn (180–200 meters / 100 grams):
127(144)161(170) meters / 100(100)100(100) grams

Needles
4.5 mm (US 7) a circular needle and 4 mm (US 6), 3.5 mm (US 4) a short tip needle (or longer if magic loop technique is used) or Double-Pointed Needles.

Gauge
18 sts x 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm in Stockinette Stitch or Lou Pattern, knitted flat with 4.5 mm needles (after blocking)
